Devilman

About Devilman

If you are hunting for a new action series, Devilman (デビルマン) deserves a look (1972). The setup goes like this. The setup: Following an accident in the Himalayas, Akira Fudou's body has been taken over by none other than the fearsome demon, Devilman. However, upon living with Akira's relatives, Devilman has come to find himself rather fond of humanity - even if it means getting roughed up by his girlfriend, the Most Risky Miki Makimura for acting out.

Beyond that: Wishing to kill the traitor, Xenon begins unleashing a series of cruel, grotesque demons unto Earth, and only Devilman stands between them and humanity's demise. Can the reluctant hero save his soul while keeping the city and his concealed identity safe?

In an action series like this, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Akira Fudou (Ryouichi Tanaka) and Psycho Jenny (Reiko Mutou) are two of the characters you will meet early. It will appeal most to viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. With 39 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Toei Animation, which means the visual identity of Devilman follows that studio's craft. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. With a 6.4/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. Voice casting, including Ryouichi Tanaka as Akira Fudou, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. It aired in 1972, which makes it easy to place in the wider anime calendar.
