Bubblegum Crisis

About Bubblegum Crisis

Here is what Bubblegum Crisis (バブルガムクライシス) is about, retold in plain terms: an action, mecha and sci-fi anime by AIC (1987). In short: In the near future, Tokyo was left flattened as a result from a great earthquake. A new metropolis, MegaTokyo, was then recreated due in no small part from the aid of a multi-million dollar company, Genom Corp.

Also worth knowing: Genom created and mass-produced biomechanical creatures called Boomers to aid in the restoration of MegaTokyo. When the Boomers began to run out of control, the ADPolice at first tried to stop them, but they proved to be far more difficult to deal with than was first imagined. Under the ever looming Boomer threat, a group of four girls from varying degrees of society banded together.

As an action title, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Voice work is led by Kinuko Oomori as Priscilla Asagiri and Akiko Hiramatsu as Nene Romanova. Think of it as a pick for viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. The run is 8 episodes in total, so you know what you are signing up for.
