Hetalia Axis Powers

About Hetalia Axis Powers

Looking for background on Hetalia Axis Powers (ヘタリア Axis Powers)? This comedy series by Studio DEEN (2009) starts out like this. In short: Based on a popular web-released manga series by Hidekazu Himaruya, this has been described as a "cynical gag" story set in Europe in the years between WW1 and WW2 (1918-1939). For example, the Italia Veneziano character is into pasta and women.

Along the way, the Deutsche (German) bishi loves potatoes and sausages, and Nippon is an otaku boy. Installments of the manga have jumped back and forth in setting from the age-old times to modern-day geopolitics. The manga's title comes the Japanese words for "useless" (hetare) and Italy (Italia).

As a comedy title, timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. Voice work is led by Daisuke Namikawa as Italia and Hiroki Takahashi as Nihon. If you count yourself among viewers who want something light between heavier series, put it on your list. At 52 episodes in total, it is easy to plan a viewing schedule.
