Air

About Air

Looking for background on Air? This drama, romance and slice of life series by Kyoto Animation (2005) starts out like this. What the story covers: Yukito Kunisaki is on an adventure in search of the Winged Maiden who was bound to the sky centuries ago, after hearing an old childhood tale from his mother. As Yukito shows his puppet show to people in an attempt to make some money, he stumbles on himself in a small town in which he did not expect to stay very long.

More of the story: However, when he crosses paths with an unusual girl named Misuzu, things take a drastic turn as he is invited to stay with her. By staying in the quaint town, Yukito soon becomes friends with the locals. As he gets to know them better, he learns of their problems and decides to help, putting his search for the Winged Maiden on hold.

In a drama series like this, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. Yukito Kunisaki (Daisuke Ono) and Misuzu Kamio (Tomoko Kawakami) are two of the characters you will meet early. If you count yourself among viewers who prefer story and feelings over flashy action, put it on your list. With 13 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Kyoto Animation, which means the visual identity of Air follows that studio's craft. Within the drama category, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. Its 6.9/10 score suggests opinions are split, so it suits viewers who already like the genre. On the casting side, Daisuke Ono voicing Yukito Kunisaki gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 2005, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
