Ultraviolet: Code 044

About Ultraviolet: Code 044

Meet Ultraviolet: Code 044 (ウルトラヴァイオレットコード044), an action and sci-fi anime by MADHOUSE and Tezuka Productions (2008). Here is the premise in a nutshell. At its core: 044 becomes the strongest female soldier excelling in combat through gene manipulation using a virus. However, in exchange for her abilities, her days become numbered.

Soon after, the next mission of the government is to destroy a bloodthirsty squad, Phage, and its leader King. In her clash, she encounters a Phage soldier, Luka, and comes across herself unable to kill him. She wonders why, but as a result, Daxus Jr., the leader of the government group, regards her as a traitor.

In an action series like this, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. 044 (Romi Park) and Luka Bloom (Tomokazu Seki) are two of the characters you will meet early. If you count yourself among viewers who like fast, high-impact fights, put it on your list. At 12 episodes in total, it is easy to plan a viewing schedule.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with MADHOUSE and Tezuka Productions, which means the visual identity of Ultraviolet: Code 044 follows that studio's craft. Within the action category, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. With a 4.9/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. On the casting side, Romi Park voicing 044 gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 2008, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
