Devil May Cry

About Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry (デビル メイ クライ) arrives as an action anime by MADHOUSE (2007), and the premise is easy to summarize. The premise: Cursed to live as both monster and man, Dante needs to spend his life fighting the demonic forces of darkness. Brandishing his sword, Rebellion, and his always-loaded guns, Ebony and Ivory, Dante is more than happy to send the demons back to hell—especially when there’s money to be made.

Further in, the wildly popular video game Devil May Cry is now a series, and this time, there’s no sympathy for the devil.

As an action title, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Dante (Toshiyuki Morikawa) and Trish (Atsuko Tanaka) are two of the characters you will meet early. It will appeal most to viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. The run is 12 episodes in total, so you know what you are signing up for.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with MADHOUSE, which means the visual identity of Devil May Cry follows that studio's craft. Within the action category, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. With a 6.7/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. Voice casting, including Toshiyuki Morikawa as Dante, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. It aired in 2007, which makes it easy to place in the wider anime calendar.
