Himitsu no Akko-chan
ひみつのアッコちゃん
Data sourced from AniList · Updated Jan 6,
Atsuko "Akko-chan" Kagami (known variously as "Stilly," "Caroline," or "Julie" in Western versions of the anime) is an energetic elementary school girl who has an affinity for mirrors. One day, her favorite mirror which was given to Akko by her mother (or in some versions, by her father, as a present from India) is broken, and she prefers to bury it in her yard rather than throw it to the trash can. In her dreams, she is contacted by a spirit (or in some cases the Queen of the Mirror Kingdom) who is moved that the little girl would treat the mirror so respectfully and not simply throw it away. Akko-chan is then given the gift of a magical mirror and taught an enchantment that will allow her to transform into anything she wishes. (Source: Wikipedia)

About Himitsu no Akko-chan
Here is what Himitsu no Akko-chan (ひみつのアッコちゃん) is about, retold in plain terms: a comedy and mahou shoujo anime by Toei Animation (1969). The setup: Atsuko "Akko-chan" Kagami (known variously as "Stilly," "Caroline," or "Julie" in Western versions of the anime) is an energetic elementary school girl who has an affinity for mirrors. One day, her favorite mirror which was given to Akko by her mother (or in some versions, by her father, as a present from India) is broken, and she prefers to bury it in her yard rather than throw it to the trash can.
Along the way, in her dreams, she is contacted by a spirit (or in some cases the Queen of the Mirror Domain) who is moved that the little girl would treat the mirror so respectfully and not simply throw it away. Akko-chan is then given the gift of a magical mirror and taught an enchantment that will allow her to transform into anything she wishes.
As a comedy title, timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. Atsuko Kagami (Yoshiko Oota) and Motoko Naniwa (Sumiko Shirakawa) are two of the characters you will meet early. It will appeal most to viewers who want something light between heavier series. With 94 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.
Production & Appeal
Toei Animation is the studio behind Himitsu no Akko-chan, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion. Because it leans on comedy, timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. Its 6.5/10 score suggests opinions are split, so it suits viewers who already like the genre. Voice casting, including Yoshiko Oota as Atsuko Kagami, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. Released in 1969, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
