Fist of the North Star

About Fist of the North Star

Here is what Fist of the North Star (北斗の拳) is about, retold in plain terms: an action, drama and sci-fi anime by Toei Animation (1984). In short: Nuclear war has devastated the planet, turning one fertile ground into a barren, inhospitable landscape on which mankind struggles desperately to stay alive. Society has collapsed and a confront for control wages between vicious dictators, super-formidable mutants, and biker gangs that terrorize the streets.

Soon after, in a world so cruel and bleak, only the chosen one can restore civilization to its former self. Kenshiro - master of the Hokuto Shinken fighting technique; a martial art so awesomely brutal that only a single being can be entrusted with its full strength!

With action at the core, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Kenshirou (Akira Kamiya) and Rei (Kaneto Shiozawa) are two of the characters you will meet early. Think of it as a pick for viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. The run is 109 episodes in total, so you know what you are signing up for.

Production & Appeal

Animation is handled by Toei Animation, so the studio's house style defines how Fist of the North Star looks and moves on screen. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. At 7.6/10 it earns a solid reception, a safe pick for fans of the genre. On the casting side, Akira Kamiya voicing Kenshirou gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 1984, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
