Devil May Cry

About Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry (デビル メイ クライ) arrives as an action anime by MADHOUSE (2007), and the premise is easy to summarize. The setup: Cursed to live as both monster and man, Dante has to spend his life fighting the demonic forces of darkness. Brandishing his sword, Rebellion, and his always-loaded guns, Ebony and Ivory, Dante is more than happy to send the demons back to hell—especially when there’s money to be made.

From there, the wildly popular video game Devil May Cry is now a series, and this time, there’s no sympathy for the devil.

With action at the core, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Dante (Toshiyuki Morikawa) and Trish (Atsuko Tanaka) are two of the characters you will meet early. If you count yourself among viewers who like fast, high-impact fights, put it on your list. At 12 episodes in total, it is easy to plan a viewing schedule.

Production & Appeal

Animation is handled by MADHOUSE, so the studio's house style defines how Devil May Cry looks and moves on screen. Because it leans on action, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Its 6.7/10 score suggests opinions are split, so it suits viewers who already like the genre. On the casting side, Toshiyuki Morikawa voicing Dante gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 2007, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
