The Elusive Samurai

About The Elusive Samurai

Here is what The Elusive Samurai (逃げ上手の若君) is about, retold in plain terms: an action, adventure and supernatural anime by CloverWorks (2024). In short: In the year 1333, the Kamakura shogunate government comes crumbling down. A trusted vassal, Ashikaga Takauji, betrays the shogunate and organizes a rebellion.

More of the story: Houjou Tokiyuki, the rightful heir, escapes the massacre with a Shinto priest named Suwa Yorishige to Kamakura. On the run and fighting to stay alive, Tokiyuki sets in motion his plan to reclaim his birthright.

As an action title, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Narrator (Satsumi Matsuda) and Tokiyuki Houjou (Asaki Yuikawa) are two of the characters you will meet early. Think of it as a pick for viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. With 12 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with CloverWorks, which means the visual identity of The Elusive Samurai follows that studio's craft. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. At 7.7/10 it earns a solid reception, a safe pick for fans of the genre. Voice casting, including Satsumi Matsuda as Narrator, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. Released in 2024, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
