Junji Ito Collection: Tomie

About Junji Ito Collection: Tomie

Junji Ito Collection: Tomie (伊藤潤二「コレクション」富江) blends drama, horror and supernatural by Studio DEEN (2018). Below is a fresh retelling of what the story is about. The setup: Unaired episodes included with the second and third DVD sets of the TV anime. Tomie Kawakami is a femme fatale with long black hair and a beauty mark just under her left eye.

Further in, she can seduce nearly any man, and drive them to murder as well, even though the victim is often Tomie herself. While one lover seeks to keep her for himself, another grows terrified of the immortal succubus. Soon they realize no matter how many times they kill her, the world will never be free of Tomie.

With drama at the core, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. At the front of the cast is Tomie, played by Rie Suegara in the Japanese track. This one is best suited to viewers who prefer story and feelings over flashy action. With 2 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Studio DEEN, which means the visual identity of Junji Ito Collection: Tomie follows that studio's craft. Because it leans on drama, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. With a 6.4/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. On the casting side, Rie Suegara voicing Tomie gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 2018, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
