Hulu Xiongdi

About Hulu Xiongdi

Hulu Xiongdi (葫芦兄弟) blends action by Shanghai Animation Film Studio (1986). Below is a fresh retelling of what the story is about. What the story covers: Legend has it that two demons were jailed in the Calabash Mountains, one a Scorpion spirit and the other a Snake spirit. One day, a pangolin happens to drill a hole on the slope and the two spirits escape from the cave, causing grave harm to the nearby residents.

Along the way, the pangolin hurries to an old man and says that only by growing calabashes in seven colours can they annihilate the spirits. The old man spares no time in growing seven calabashes, each a different colour of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, cyan, blue, and purple.

As an action title, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. If you count yourself among viewers who like fast, high-impact fights, put it on your list. With 13 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Animation is handled by Shanghai Animation Film Studio, so the studio's house style defines how Hulu Xiongdi looks and moves on screen. Within the action category, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. With a 5.7/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. Released in 1986, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
