Meiji Gekken: 1874

About Meiji Gekken: 1874

Looking for background on Meiji Gekken: 1874 (明治撃剣－1874－)? This action, drama and mystery series by Tsumugi Akita Anime Lab (2024) starts out like this. The setup: By 1874, seven years have passed since the end of the samurai era. A former samurai, Shizuma Orikasa works as a rickshaw driver in Tokyo while looking for his fiancée, Sumie Kanomata, who went missing during the Boshin War.

More of the story: Shizuma thwarts an assassination attempt and joins the newly established police department, where he’ll confront to stop dark forces from overthrowing the government.

With action at the core, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Shizuma Origasa (Yuuichi Nakamura) and Senri Kurogi (Lynn) are two of the characters you will meet early. Think of it as a pick for viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. With 10 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.
