Star Blazers: The Bolar Wars

About Star Blazers: The Bolar Wars

Star Blazers: The Bolar Wars (宇宙戦艦ヤマトIII) blends drama and sci-fi by Tokyo Douga (1980). Below is a fresh retelling of what the story is about. What the story covers: A stray missile from a confrontation between the Galman empire and the Bolar Federation crashes into the sun, turning it into a time bomb of radiation. The Star Force once again sets off into space, this time on a quest to look for a new realm for the human race.

In a drama series like this, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. Susumu Kodai (Kei Tomiyama) and Yuki Mori (Harumi Ichiryuusai) are two of the characters you will meet early.

This one is best suited to viewers who prefer story and feelings over flashy action. At 25 episodes in total, it is easy to plan a viewing schedule.

Production & Appeal

Animation is handled by Tokyo Douga, so the studio's house style defines how Star Blazers: The Bolar Wars looks and moves on screen. Within the drama category, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. With a 6.8/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. On the casting side, Kei Tomiyama voicing Susumu Kodai gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 1980, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
