Nijiiro Hotaru: Eien no Natsuyasumi

About Nijiiro Hotaru: Eien no Natsuyasumi

Nijiiro Hotaru: Eien no Natsuyasumi (虹色ほたる~永遠の夏休み~) arrives as a fantasy anime by Toei Animation (2012), and the premise is easy to summarize. The premise: Yuuta was 12-year-old boy, who had lost his father in the traffic accident one year ago. In the summer vacation, he visited a deserted dam deep in the mountains, where he had a good time with his father before.

Further in, suddenly a thunder storm occurred and he slipped on the ground. He lost consciousness and woke up to find a girl and an unfamiliar village. He time-traveled 30 years and reached a village, which sank at the bottom of the dam.

With fantasy at the core, world-building, magic systems and creature design set the tone. Yuuta (Takahiro Sakurai) and Saeko Okuyama (Ayumi Kimura) are two of the characters you will meet early. If you count yourself among fans of magic, kingdoms and invented worlds, put it on your list. With 1 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Toei Animation is the studio behind Nijiiro Hotaru: Eien no Natsuyasumi, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion. Because it leans on fantasy, world-building, magic systems and creature design set the tone. With a 6.8/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. Voice casting, including Takahiro Sakurai as Yuuta, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. Released in 2012, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
