Cyborg 009

About Cyborg 009

Looking for background on Cyborg 009 (サイボーグ009)? This action, adventure and mecha series by Toei Animation and Studio Live (1979) starts out like this. In short: Nine people are tricked and forced by an evil organization called The Neo-Black Ghosts into becoming cyborgs. But they refuse to become the neo-black ghosts killing machines, and guided by Dr.

Beyond that: Gilmore the cyborgs escape. They team up in order to fight the neo-black ghosts and injustice where ever it shows it's face.

With action at the core, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Joe Shimamura (Kazuhiko Inoue) and Jet Link (Keiichi Noda) are two of the characters you will meet early. This one is best suited to viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. With 50 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Toei Animation and Studio Live, which means the visual identity of Cyborg 009 follows that studio's craft. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. With a 6.7/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. On the casting side, Kazuhiko Inoue voicing Joe Shimamura gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 1979, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
