About Sekirei

Meet Sekirei (セキレイ), an action, comedy and ecchi anime by Seven Arcs (2008). Here is the premise in a nutshell. At its core: Minato Sahashi is extremely intelligent, yet due to his inability to cope under pressure has failed the college entrance exam twice. As a result he has been branded an idiot and loser by many.

Further in, one day after talking to his yet again disappointed mother he comes into contact with a girl named Musubi who was under attack. The girl runs but takes him with her and soon finds that Minato, while unknown to him, is an Ashikabi, one of the enigmatic set of masters that have the genetic trait that can become partners with some of the 108 cute girls. The reason for the partnership allows the Sekirei to use all their power to win in the competition held by the enigmatic MBI corporation.

With action at the core, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Minato Sahashi (Shinnosuke Tachibana) and Musubi (Saori Hayami) are two of the characters you will meet early. It will appeal most to viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. At 12 episodes in total, it is easy to plan a viewing schedule.

Production & Appeal

Seven Arcs is the studio behind Sekirei, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion. Within the action category, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. With a 6.5/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. On the casting side, Shinnosuke Tachibana voicing Minato Sahashi gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 2008, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
