Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi

About Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi (アベノ橋魔法☆商店街) blends comedy, ecchi and fantasy by GAINAX and MADHOUSE (2002). Below is a fresh retelling of what the story is about. At its core: Imamiya Satoshi, "Sasshi" to his companions, has grown up in the Abenobashi Shopping Arcade in Osaka, along with his childhood friend, Asahina Arumi. Now, all that was stable in his life is in ruins.

Further in, his family's bath house has closed and been torn down, and Arumi's family is moving to Hokkaido - and taking her with them. In the midst of all this, something happens to the framework of reality, and Sasshi and Arumi slip into a weird parallel world. It's still Abenobashi, but not their Abenobashi.

In a comedy series like this, timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. Voice work is led by Tomo Saeki as Satoshi Imamiya and Yuki Matsuoka as Arumi Asahina. This one is best suited to viewers who want something light between heavier series. At 13 episodes in total, it is easy to plan a viewing schedule.

Production & Appeal

GAINAX and MADHOUSE is the studio behind Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion. The comedy focus matters here: timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. With a 6.9/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. Voice casting, including Tomo Saeki as Satoshi Imamiya, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. It aired in 2002, which makes it easy to place in the wider anime calendar.
