Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overture to a New War

About Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overture to a New War

Here is what Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overture to a New War (銀河英雄伝説外伝 新たなる戦いの序曲[オーヴァチュア]) is about, retold in plain terms: an action, drama and sci-fi anime by Artland and Magic Bus (1993). At its core: Led by Reinhard von Müsel, the Galactic Empire crushes the Free Planets Alliance in the Fourth Fight of Tiamat. Arriving in the Imperial capital of Odin to a hero's welcome, Reinhard's victory earns him a promotion to High Admiral and the distinguished title of Count von Lohengramm.

Along the way, on the other side, Yang Wen-li safely returns to the Alliance capital of Heinessen without fanfare and reunites with his dear friends. Reinhard and Yang look forward to a long-awaited reprieve. However, at the request of the scheming Duke Otho von Braunschweig, the Imperial High Command orders the new High Admiral to invade the Alliance with a fleet of twenty thousand ships.

In an action series like this, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Voice work is led by Kei Tomiyama as Wenli Yang and Ryou Horikawa as Reinhard von Lohengramm. Think of it as a pick for viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. At 1 episodes in total, it is easy to plan a viewing schedule.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Artland and Magic Bus, which means the visual identity of Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Overture to a New War follows that studio's craft. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. A 7.8/10 score points to a dependable, well-liked series. Voice casting, including Kei Tomiyama as Wenli Yang, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. Released in 1993, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
