Synopsis

Nobita Nobi is so hapless that his 22nd century decendants are still impoverished as a result of his 20th century bumbling. In a bid to raise their social status, their servant, a robotic cat named Doraemon, decides to travel back in time and guide Nobita on the proper path to fortune. Unfortunately Doraemon, a dysfunctional robot that the familly acquired by accident (but chose to keep nonetheless), isn't much better off than Nobita. The robot leads Nobita on many adventures, and while Nobita's life certainly is more exciting with the robot cat from the future, it is questionable if it is in fact better in the way that Doraemon planned. Note: Most of the episodes are lost; a fire destroyed most of the film prints. Of the 52 segments made, only 21 are known to survive (two of which have no audio).

About Doraemon

Doraemon (ドラえもん) arrives as an adventure anime by Tokyo Movie Shinsha (1973), and the premise is easy to summarize. The setup: Nobita Nobi is so hapless that his 22nd century decendants are still impoverished as a result of his 20th century bumbling. In a bid to raise their social status, their servant, a robotic cat named Doraemon, chooses to travel back in time and guide Nobita on the proper path to fortune.

Also worth knowing: Unfortunately Doraemon, a dysfunctional robot that the familly acquired by accident (but chose to keep nonetheless), isn't much better off than Nobita. The robot leads Nobita on many adventures, and while Nobita's life certainly is more exciting with the robot cat from the future, it is questionable if it is in fact better in the way that Doraemon planned. Note: Most of the episodes are lost; a fire destroyed most of the film prints.

With adventure at the core, exploration, new locations and a steady sense of momentum drive the story. Nobita Nobi (Noriko Ohara) and Doraemon (Masako Nozawa) are two of the characters you will meet early. If you count yourself among anyone who enjoys travel-the-world storytelling, put it on your list. With 26 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Tokyo Movie Shinsha is the studio behind Doraemon, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion. The adventure focus matters here: exploration, new locations and a steady sense of momentum drive the story. A 7.2/10 score points to a dependable, well-liked series. Voice casting, including Noriko Ohara as Nobita Nobi, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. Released in 1973, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
