Aquatic Language

About Aquatic Language

Here is what Aquatic Language (水のコトバ) is about, retold in plain terms: a drama, psychological and sci-fi anime by Studio Rikka (2002). At its core: Several people are spending their evening in a cafe. Two gossiping girls, two debating men, a bookworm and a boy, who just broke up with his girlfriend.

Along the way, the cafe's waitress sets off a chat with him, persuading him to take a look at certain easel, while other customers begin to notice unusual things.

As a drama title, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. Voice work is led by Rina Matsufuji as Waitress and Satoshi Watanabe as Hong. It will appeal most to viewers who prefer story and feelings over flashy action. The run is 1 episodes in total, so you know what you are signing up for.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Studio Rikka, which means the visual identity of Aquatic Language follows that studio's craft. Within the drama category, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. With a 6.1/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. On the casting side, Rina Matsufuji voicing Waitress gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 2002, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
