Kiitaro's yokai picture diary

About Kiitaro's yokai picture diary

Kiitaro's yokai picture diary (奇異太郎少年の妖怪絵日記) blends comedy, romance and slice of life by Creators in Pack (2016). Below is a fresh retelling of what the story is about. In short: This is the visual diary of Kiitarou's experience with youkai. He's a boy with a very strong spirit sense, but when he entered a forbidden storehouse, he was kicked out of his home.

Along the way, he soon found a new place to live, where he met a zashiki warashi (house spirit) named Suzu. He and Suzu soon began to attract all kinds of spirit creatures, starting with a nurikabe (appears as a wall that impedes travelers) and mokumokuren (appears as eyes in a torn paper wall). What kind of folkloric creature will he meet next?

In a comedy series like this, timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. Suzu (Arisa Nakada) and Kiitarou (Hiromi Igarashi) are two of the characters you will meet early. Think of it as a pick for viewers who want something light between heavier series. The run is 12 episodes in total, so you know what you are signing up for.

Production & Appeal

Animation is handled by Creators in Pack, so the studio's house style defines how Kiitaro's yokai picture diary looks and moves on screen. The comedy focus matters here: timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. With a 5.9/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. On the casting side, Arisa Nakada voicing Suzu gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 2016, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
