Negima!

About Negima!

Here is what Negima! (魔法先生 ネギま！) is about, retold in plain terms: a comedy, ecchi and fantasy anime by Xebec (2005). The premise: 10-year old Negi Springfield is a wizard-in-training, and needs only to pass one more test in order to become a Master Wizard. Unfortunately, his final task is a bizarre one- to become an English teacher at an all-females boarding school.

As things develop, as soon as he arrives, he completely embarasses one of his students, Asuna Kagurazaka, and replaces the teacher she loves, which garners her hatred. To make matters worse, Asuna learns that Negi is a wizard, and promises to tell unless he helps her out. Unfortunately, circumstances force them to work together to do many things, from fighting evil wizards to helping the class pass their final exam, with a lot of humor, magic, and romances thrown in.

As a comedy title, timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. Negi Springfield (Rina Satou) and Asuna Kagurazaka (Akemi Kanda) are two of the characters you will meet early. Think of it as a pick for viewers who want something light between heavier series. With 26 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Xebec, which means the visual identity of Negima! follows that studio's craft. Within the comedy category, timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. Its 6.5/10 score suggests opinions are split, so it suits viewers who already like the genre. Voice casting, including Rina Satou as Negi Springfield, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu.
