Uzumaki

About Uzumaki

If you are hunting for a new drama series, Uzumaki (うずまき) deserves a look (2024). The setup goes like this. The setup: Kurozu-cho, a small fogbound town on the coast of Japan, is cursed. According to Shuichi Saito, the withdrawn boyfriend of teenager Kirie Goshima, their town is haunted not by a person or being but by a pattern: uzumaki, the spiral, the hypnotic secret shape of the realm.

Further in, it manifests itself in small ways: seashells, ferns, whirlpools in water, whirlwinds in air. In large ways: the spiral marks on people's bodies, the insane obsessions of Shuichi's father, the voice from the cochlea in your inner ear. As the madness spreads, the inhabitants of Kurouzu-cho are pulled ever deeper, as if into a whirlpool from which there is no return...

As a drama title, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. Kirie Goshima (Uki Satake) and Shuuichi Saitou (Shinichirou Miki) are two of the characters you will meet early. If you count yourself among viewers who prefer story and feelings over flashy action, put it on your list. With 4 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Production I.G and Akatsuki, which means the visual identity of Uzumaki follows that studio's craft. Because it leans on drama, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. Its 5.4/10 score suggests opinions are split, so it suits viewers who already like the genre. On the casting side, Uki Satake voicing Kirie Goshima gives the lead role a recognizable voice. It aired in 2024, which makes it easy to place in the wider anime calendar.
