Combattler V

About Combattler V

Combattler V (超電磁ロボ コン・バトラーV) arrives as an adventure anime by Sunrise and Toei Animation (1976), and the premise is easy to summarize. In short: The first of Tadao Nagahama's Romance Super Robot Trilogy. (#2: Chou Denji Machine Voltes V, #3: Toushou Daimos) Thousands of years ago. One group, lead by the scientist Oreana, landed on Earth, but was delayed from their assignment.

From there, in the early 21st century, Oreana's group reawakens and begins their plan to conquer the Earth. The only effective defense against the Campbellians' giant biomechanical slave beasts is the super-electromagnetic robot, Combattler V and its pilots.

With adventure at the core, exploration, new locations and a steady sense of momentum drive the story. Voice work is led by Miyuki Ueda as Chizuru Nanbara and Yuuji Mitsuya as Hyouma Aoi. If you count yourself among anyone who enjoys travel-the-world storytelling, put it on your list. The run is 54 episodes in total, so you know what you are signing up for.

Production & Appeal

Animation is handled by Sunrise and Toei Animation, so the studio's house style defines how Combattler V looks and moves on screen. The adventure focus matters here: exploration, new locations and a steady sense of momentum drive the story. With a 6.5/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. Voice casting, including Miyuki Ueda as Chizuru Nanbara, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. Released in 1976, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
