009-1

About 009-1

009-1 (ゼロゼロナインワン) arrives as an action anime by Ishimori Entertainment (2006), and the premise is easy to summarize. The premise: Mylene Hoffman, a beautiful cyborg spy with the codename "009-1" lives in an alternative realm where the cold war never ended, continuously on-going for 140 years. The world is split into two factions, the West and the East block.

From there, a masquerade of peace between the two is slowly dissipated as the conflict occurs. Through politics, the two factions clash over supremacy over technology to threats of a nuclear attack. Mylene Hoffman, teaming up with three other agents, gets surrounded by deception, chaos and rivalry as she carries out missions assigned by her superiors.

With action at the core, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Mylene Hoffman (Yumiko Shaku) and Number Zero (Houchuu Ootsuka) are two of the characters you will meet early. If you count yourself among viewers who like fast, high-impact fights, put it on your list. At 12 episodes in total, it is easy to plan a viewing schedule.

Production & Appeal

Ishimori Entertainment is the studio behind 009-1, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Its 5.9/10 score suggests opinions are split, so it suits viewers who already like the genre. Voice casting, including Yumiko Shaku as Mylene Hoffman, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. Released in 2006, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
