Meiji Gekken: 1874

About Meiji Gekken: 1874

Meiji Gekken: 1874 (明治撃剣－1874－) arrives as an action anime by Tsumugi Akita Anime Lab (2024), and the premise is easy to summarize. In short: By 1874, seven years have passed since the end of the samurai era. A former samurai, Shizuma Orikasa works as a rickshaw driver in Tokyo while looking for his fiancée, Sumie Kanomata, who went missing during the Boshin War.

Also worth knowing: Shizuma thwarts an assassination attempt and joins the newly established police department, where he’ll confront to stop dark forces from overthrowing the government.

In an action series like this, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Shizuma Origasa (Yuuichi Nakamura) and Senri Kurogi (Lynn) are two of the characters you will meet early. This one is best suited to viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. The run is 10 episodes in total, so you know what you are signing up for.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Tsumugi Akita Anime Lab, which means the visual identity of Meiji Gekken: 1874 follows that studio's craft. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Its 6.0/10 score suggests opinions are split, so it suits viewers who already like the genre. On the casting side, Yuuichi Nakamura voicing Shizuma Origasa gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 2024, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
