Hengen Taima Yakou Karura Mau! Nara Onryou Emaki

About Hengen Taima Yakou Karura Mau! Nara Onryou Emaki

If you are hunting for a new action series, Hengen Taima Yakou Karura Mau! Nara Onryou Emaki (変幻退魔夜行 カルラ舞う！ 奈良怨霊絵巻) deserves a look (1989). The setup goes like this. The premise: Shoko and Maiko Ougi are apparently two average schoolgirls in pursuit of graduating and having fun. Shii-chan is the more serious while Mai-chan is more fun-loving.

Further in, in reality, the two sisters are formidable exorcists from the Karura temple. Each wields half the power...Shii-chan can "see" the spirits, and Mai-chan can banish them. This is the movie adaptation of a spooky series with heavy emphasis on traditionally Japanese occult themes.

As an action title, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Think of it as a pick for viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. With 1 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. With a 5.3/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. Released in 1989, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
