Popotan

About Popotan

Looking for background on Popotan (ぽぽたん)? This comedy, drama and ecchi series by Shaft and Animaruya (2003) starts out like this. The premise: Beautiful sisters Ai, Mai, Mii, their android maid Mea and slippery pet ferret Unagi make an amazing adventure together through time and space without ever leaving their beloved mansion behind! Following the clues of the odd dandelion-like "Popotan," the girls are theoretically seeking the person who has the answers to their most personal questions, but they seem to have more than enough time to take side trips.

From there, the girls' ultimate destiny holds more than a few surprises of its own, and not every moment is filled with hilarity, as moving through time means having to leave friends behind as well.

In a comedy series like this, timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. Mai (Masumi Asano) and Ai (Sayaka Oohara) are two of the characters you will meet early. If you count yourself among viewers who want something light between heavier series, put it on your list. With 12 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Shaft and Animaruya is the studio behind Popotan, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion. The comedy focus matters here: timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. With a 5.8/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. Voice casting, including Masumi Asano as Mai, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. Released in 2003, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
