Jewelpet

About Jewelpet

Here is what Jewelpet (ジュエルペット) is about, retold in plain terms: a fantasy and mahou shoujo anime by Studio Comet (2009). In short: Rinko, a junior high school learner, becomes a partner with Ruby, a rabbit Jewelpet, to find the Jewel Charms that were accidentally dropped from Jewel Land and got lost in the world of humans. Since Jewel Charms appear around people in trouble, Rinko and Ruby always get involved in helping them solve their problems.

As things develop, with help from their friends and a good-looking high-level goverment official, they use the magic of Jewelpets to overcome obstacles, and in each episode they find another missing Jewelpet. Meanwhile, Black Cat Diana manipulates a group of petty criminals as she plans something evil to Jewel Land, the homeland of the Jewelpets.

With fantasy at the core, world-building, magic systems and creature design set the tone. Voice work is led by Eri Kamei as Rinko Kougyoku and Ayaka Saitou as Ruby. Think of it as a pick for fans of magic, kingdoms and invented worlds. At 52 episodes in total, it is easy to plan a viewing schedule.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Studio Comet, which means the visual identity of Jewelpet follows that studio's craft. Because it leans on fantasy, world-building, magic systems and creature design set the tone. With a 6.7/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. On the casting side, Eri Kamei voicing Rinko Kougyoku gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 2009, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
