About maboroshi

Here is what maboroshi (アリスとテレスのまぼろし工場) is about, retold in plain terms: a drama, fantasy and romance anime by MAPPA (2023). The setup: Masamune, a third-year middle school learner, lives in a town where all the exits have been sealed off due to a sudden explosion at a steel mill, causing time to stand still. Residents are forbidden from making any changes and spend their suffocating days in the hopes of returning to normalcy someday.

As things develop, one day, Masamune's mysterious classmate Mutsumi guides him to the fifth furnace of the steel mill, where they encounter a girl who cannot speak and resembles a wild wolf. The meeting between the two girls and Masamune disrupts the balance of the world, and the unstoppable "impulse of love" from boys and girls tired of their daily lives begins to destroy the world.

In a drama series like this, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. Masamune Kikuiri (Junya Enoki) and Mutsumi Sagami (Reina Ueda) are two of the characters you will meet early. Think of it as a pick for viewers who prefer story and feelings over flashy action. With 1 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

MAPPA is the studio behind maboroshi, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion.
