Venus Wars

About Venus Wars

Here is what Venus Wars (ヴイナス戦記) is about, retold in plain terms: an action, adventure and sci-fi anime by Kugatsusha (1989). At its core: When an ice comet slammed into the planet Venus, terraforming its toxic atmosphere into one capable of sustaining human life, mankind’s dream of colonizing other worlds became a reality. Unfortunately for the colonists, Venus isn’t the paradise they’d dreamed of.

From there, as crops fail and competition for resources intensifies, hostilities grow until the two inhabited continents stand on the brink of war. Reporter Susan Sommers arrives in the capital of Aphrodia just as Ishtar attacks and only the intervention of Hiro Seno and his Clash Bike team saves her from certain death… but now Aphrodia is under Ishtar’s control and Sue. However, their unique skill at Clash Bike, which combines motorcycle racing with roller derby, may just prove to be the concealed weapon Aphrodia needs to win the Venus Wars.

In an action series like this, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Voice work is led by Katsuhide Uekusa as Hiroki Seno and Yuuko Mizutani as Margot Nakamoto. This one is best suited to viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. The run is 1 episodes in total, so you know what you are signing up for.

Production & Appeal

Kugatsusha is the studio behind Venus Wars, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. With a 6.7/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. On the casting side, Katsuhide Uekusa voicing Hiroki Seno gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 1989, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
