Haibane Renmei

About Haibane Renmei

Haibane Renmei (灰羽連盟) arrives as a drama anime by Radix (2002), and the premise is easy to summarize. The premise: A dream of falling from the sky... and then birth. Rakka is born from a large cocoon into the Old Home, greeted by a group of girls with small wings on their backs and shining halos above their heads.

As things develop, soon Rakka’s own wings grow, a halo is placed on her head and she is told that she needs to work in the nearby town of Grie. She soon realizes that the town and the entire realm they live in are confined behind the Wall, a tall, impenetrable wall that none except the mysterious Toga are allowed to exit.

As a drama title, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. Voice work is led by Ryou Hirohashi as Rakka and Junko Noda as Reki. This one is best suited to viewers who prefer story and feelings over flashy action. The run is 13 episodes in total, so you know what you are signing up for.
