éX-Driver

About éX-Driver

éX-Driver (エクスドライバー) blends action and sci-fi by Actas and Ashi Productions (2000). Below is a fresh retelling of what the story is about. At its core: Ex-Driver is set in the future, when all transportation is easily controlled by AI. Though like all machines they tend to break down or lose control or re-programmed.

As things develop, this is where three high schoolers with non AI cars, Subaru WRX, Super 7, Lotus comes in to save the day and make sure the public is safe at all times.

In an action series like this, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Voice work is led by Yumiko Kobayashi as Soichi Sugano and Youko Asada as Lorna Endou. This one is best suited to viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. The run is 6 episodes in total, so you know what you are signing up for.

Production & Appeal

Animation is handled by Actas and Ashi Productions, so the studio's house style defines how éX-Driver looks and moves on screen. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Its 6.4/10 score suggests opinions are split, so it suits viewers who already like the genre. On the casting side, Yumiko Kobayashi voicing Soichi Sugano gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 2000, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
