About Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation

Here is what Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation (ファンタシースターオンライン２ ジ アニメーション) is about, retold in plain terms: an action and sci-fi anime by Telecom Animation Film (2016). The premise: In the year 2027, the video game Phantasy Star Online 2 is all the rage at Seiga Academy. Every student is on board the fad—except for Itsuki Tachibana, a well-rounded pupil who doesn't play video games.

Beyond that: Due to its popularity, the game is currently under review at Seiga Academy to see if it has a negative impact on the learners. Consequently, this causes Itsuki to catch the attention of Rina Izumi, the perfectionist learner council president who aims to prove that the game is not to blame. To accomplish her objective, Rina recruits Itsuki as the student council vice president and tasks him with learning to play the game while keeping his grades up.

As an action title, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Matoi (Satomi Satou) and Aika Suzuki (Mao Ichimichi) are two of the characters you will meet early. It will appeal most to viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. With 12 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Telecom Animation Film is the studio behind Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. With a 5.8/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. Voice casting, including Satomi Satou as Matoi, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. It aired in 2016, which makes it easy to place in the wider anime calendar.
