Ranma ½

About Ranma ½

Meet Ranma ½ (らんま1/2), an action, comedy and ecchi anime by Studio DEEN (1989). Here is the premise in a nutshell. At its core: After taking a surprise dip in a cursed spring while on a training quest in China, martial artist Ranma Saotome and his father, Genma, aren't quite themselves anymore. Now Ranma turns into a girl whenever he's splashed with cold water, and Genma turns into a panda!

Along the way, their new forms cause nothing but confusion at the Tendou dojo, where Soun Tendo is waiting to introduce one of his three daughters to Ranma - as his fiancee! Turns out Genma and Soun arranged the match long ago, but the girl, Akane, and the boy, Ranma, aren't exactly crazy about the idea, or each other! Or are they? Watch the gender switching, jealous rages, and martial arts fights unfold all over again!

With action at the core, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Voice work is led by Megumi Hayashibara as Ranma Saotome and Noriko Hidaka as Akane Tendou. It will appeal most to viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. The run is 18 episodes in total, so you know what you are signing up for.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Studio DEEN, which means the visual identity of Ranma ½ follows that studio's craft. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. A 7.5/10 score points to a dependable, well-liked series. Voice casting, including Megumi Hayashibara as Ranma Saotome, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. Released in 1989, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
