About Osomatsu-kun (1988)

Osomatsu-kun (1988) (おそ松くん (1988)) arrives as a comedy anime by Studio Pierrot (1988), and the premise is easy to summarize. At its core: The would-be hijinks of the mischievous Matsuno sextuplets are hijacked from episode one by colorful buck-toothed con man Iyami and Chibita, his bald munchkin sidekick. Nearly every episode is a standalone comedy cavalcade with the above cast as well as other quirky locals who show up in a number of different roles as the series shifts effortlessly between time periods and genres.

In a comedy series like this, timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. Rerere no Oji-san (Shigeru Chiba) and Jyushimatsu Matsuno (Naoko Matsui) are two of the characters you will meet early.

It will appeal most to viewers who want something light between heavier series. With 86 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Studio Pierrot, which means the visual identity of Osomatsu-kun (1988) follows that studio's craft. The comedy focus matters here: timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. With a 6.5/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. On the casting side, Shigeru Chiba voicing Rerere no Oji-san gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 1988, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
