The Daichis - Earth's Defense Family

About The Daichis - Earth's Defense Family

The Daichis - Earth's Defense Family (地球防衛家族) arrives as an action anime by Group TAC (2001), and the premise is easy to summarize. In short: The Daichis are a family in danger of tearing itself apart. Dissatisfied and money obsessed mom Seiko has served wimpy and otaku dad Mamoru with divorce papers.

More of the story: Daughter Nozomi who has always been saddled with all the housework, feels pained that everyone is using her. The youngest albeit most foul mouthed, Dai is compelled to watch all this as everything is going to pieces. However when the Galaxy Federation recruits the Daichis to combat alien threats to the wellbeing of the Earth, it will be a chance for the family to save the world and maybe themselves.

As an action title, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Voice work is led by Motoko Kumai as Dai Daichi and Mami Koyama as Seiko Daichi. Think of it as a pick for viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. With 13 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Animation is handled by Group TAC, so the studio's house style defines how The Daichis - Earth's Defense Family looks and moves on screen. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Its 6.7/10 score suggests opinions are split, so it suits viewers who already like the genre. On the casting side, Motoko Kumai voicing Dai Daichi gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 2001, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
