Refrain Blue

About Refrain Blue

Refrain Blue arrives as a drama anime by Pink Pineapple (2000), and the premise is easy to summarize. The premise: A trip to the beach turns out to be more than expected for two people who are mourning the losses of their beloved. Perhaps a mysterious girl known as the "Umi Warabe" can help them to heal their wounds and move on with their lives.

Another thread: Yoshihiro Matsunaga is the chaperone for a group of high-school learners on a summer trip to the beach. One night he saves one of the learners, Nao Morisawa, as she sets out to drown herself. She had been on this same trip a year ago, with her fiancee, who was later killed in a plane crash.

In a drama series like this, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. Voice work is led by Ai Uchikawa as Shizuku Hayase and Shizuka Ishikawa as Chinatsu Iwasaki. It will appeal most to viewers who prefer story and feelings over flashy action. At 3 episodes in total, it is easy to plan a viewing schedule.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Pink Pineapple, which means the visual identity of Refrain Blue follows that studio's craft. Within the drama category, character writing and emotional payoff matter more than spectacle. With a 5.2/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. Voice casting, including Ai Uchikawa as Shizuku Hayase, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. It aired in 2000, which makes it easy to place in the wider anime calendar.
