Danganronpa: The Animation

About Danganronpa: The Animation

Danganronpa: The Animation (ダンガンロンパ 希望の学園と絶望の高校生 The Animation) blends horror, mystery and psychological by Lerche (2013). Below is a fresh retelling of what the story is about. The setup: A group of 15 elite high school pupils are gathered at a very special, high class high school. To graduate from this high school essentially means you'll succeed in life, but graduating is very difficult.

From there, the school is presided over by a bear called Monokuma, and he explains to them that their graduation hinges around committing a murder. The only way to graduate is to kill one of your classmates and get away with it. If the other classmates discover the identity of the killer, the killer is the only one executed.

With horror at the core, atmosphere, sound and restraint do the heavy lifting. Voice work is led by Youko Hikasa as Kyouko Kirigiri and Makiko Oomoto as Sayaka Maizono. If you count yourself among viewers comfortable with dark, unsettling material, put it on your list. The run is 13 episodes in total, so you know what you are signing up for.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with Lerche, which means the visual identity of Danganronpa: The Animation follows that studio's craft. The horror focus matters here: atmosphere, sound and restraint do the heavy lifting. Its 6.9/10 score suggests opinions are split, so it suits viewers who already like the genre. Voice casting, including Youko Hikasa as Kyouko Kirigiri, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. It aired in 2013, which makes it easy to place in the wider anime calendar.
