About Gushing Over Magical Girls

Gushing Over Magical Girls (魔法少女にあこがれて) arrives as a comedy anime by Asahi Production (2024), and the premise is easy to summarize. What the story covers: Hiiragi Utena is a major fangirl of the magical girls protecting her metropolis, so when she has the chance to become one herself, she leaps at the chance to join their technicolor ranks… but when she transforms. At first she tries to quit her new gig as the leader of the local baddies, but she fast realizes she enjoys it and is a total natural at tormenting the magical girls she loves so much.

As things develop, with both a bang and a whimper, Hiragi’s quest as a magical-girl-tormenting sadist has begun!

In a comedy series like this, timing, character chemistry and running gags decide whether it lands. Utena Hiiragi (Fuuka Izumi) and Sayo Minakami (Mayuko Kazama) are two of the characters you will meet early. If you count yourself among viewers who want something light between heavier series, put it on your list. At 13 episodes in total, it is easy to plan a viewing schedule.
