Key the Metal Idol

About Key the Metal Idol

Here is what Key the Metal Idol is about, retold in plain terms: an action, drama and mecha anime by Studio Pierrot (1994). In short: Her classmates at school called her Key, as in the "key" to a strange mystery. Key's "grandfather" was a kindly old scientist wanting to use his skill in robotics to create peace and love in the world.

From there, when that kindly old scientist passed away, poor Key was left behind, lacking even the ability to smile. There still is hope, however a message left behind for Key suggests a fantastic possibility. Could it really be possible for Key to become a real, live human, if she can only win the love of 30,000 people?

In an action series like this, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Voice work is led by Junko Iwao as Tokiko Mima and Miki Nagasawa as Sakura Kuriyagawa. If you count yourself among viewers who like fast, high-impact fights, put it on your list. With 15 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Studio Pierrot is the studio behind Key the Metal Idol, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion. The action focus matters here: fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. With a 6.8/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. On the casting side, Junko Iwao voicing Tokiko Mima gives the lead role a recognizable voice. It aired in 1994, which makes it easy to place in the wider anime calendar.
