Lost Universe

About Lost Universe

If you are hunting for a new adventure series, Lost Universe (ロスト・ユニバース) deserves a look (1998). The setup goes like this. The setup: Millie Nocturne has one great goal in life: to be the best in the universe - at absolutely everything! But when she tries her hand at being the "best detective," she ends up an unwilling partner with two people who will change her life forever: Kane Blueriver, the psi-blade-wielding master of the starship Swordbreaker, and Canal.

Also worth knowing: Join this unlikely trio on their adventures as they hurtle through space facing off against intergalactic crime lords, rogue starships, and hijackers dressed as chickens... and that's just the tip of the asteroid!

With adventure at the core, exploration, new locations and a steady sense of momentum drive the story. Voice work is led by Souichirou Hoshi as Kane Blueriver and Megumi Hayashibara as Canal Vorfeed. It will appeal most to anyone who enjoys travel-the-world storytelling. With 26 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Production sits with E&G Films and Studio Tulip, which means the visual identity of Lost Universe follows that studio's craft. The adventure focus matters here: exploration, new locations and a steady sense of momentum drive the story. With a 6.6/10 score, it is more of a niche pick than a universal crowd-pleaser. On the casting side, Souichirou Hoshi voicing Kane Blueriver gives the lead role a recognizable voice. It aired in 1998, which makes it easy to place in the wider anime calendar.
