Zenki

About Zenki

Looking for background on Zenki (鬼神童子ZENKI)? This action, comedy and drama series by Studio DEEN (1995) starts out like this. The premise: One thousand years ago, all manner of evil creatures beset Earth. Only the high priest, Ozuno, could control the guardian demon named Zenki and protect the realm.

Also worth knowing: Fearful that no one would ever be able to control the destructive Zenki, Ozuno sealed the creature in a stone monument before he passed on. In modern day, a young priestess named Chiaki Ozuno uncovers the monument. Strange demonic objects known as the Seeds of Evil have been appearing once again, and with them come doom for all mankind.

In an action series like this, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Anju (Megumi Ogata) and Zenki (Kappei Yamaguchi) are two of the characters you will meet early. It will appeal most to viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. With 51 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Studio DEEN is the studio behind Zenki, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion. Because it leans on action, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Its 6.5/10 score suggests opinions are split, so it suits viewers who already like the genre. Voice casting, including Megumi Ogata as Anju, adds to the appeal for fans who follow seiyuu. Released in 1995, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
