Hell Target

About Hell Target

Here is what Hell Target (ヘルターゲット) is about, retold in plain terms: a horror and sci-fi anime by Nakamura Production (1987). The setup: A spaceship is lost near the forbidden planet of Inferno II. Some years later, a second ship with a crew of nine gets there and encounters a monster that rapidly makes mince meat of most of them.

Along the way, the sole survivor, Makuro Kitazato, must destroy the monster before it can surprise a third ship that is already en route.

As a horror title, atmosphere, sound and restraint do the heavy lifting. Voice work is led by Akira Murayama as Kitazato Makurou and Gara Takashima as Meryl Brown. This one is best suited to viewers comfortable with dark, unsettling material. With 1 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Nakamura Production is the studio behind Hell Target, and its direction shapes everything from character design to motion. The horror focus matters here: atmosphere, sound and restraint do the heavy lifting. Its 4.0/10 score suggests opinions are split, so it suits viewers who already like the genre. On the casting side, Akira Murayama voicing Kitazato Makurou gives the lead role a recognizable voice. It aired in 1987, which makes it easy to place in the wider anime calendar.
