Great Pretender

About Great Pretender

Meet Great Pretender, an action, comedy and drama anime by WIT STUDIO and Production I.G (2020). Here is the premise in a nutshell. The premise: Self-styled “Japan's greatest swindler” Makoto Edamura is mainly targeting elder people and occasional foreign travelers. But when he tries to scam an apparently clueless French tourist in Tokyo, he can't possibly imagine that what looked like just another everyday job is going to take him all the way to Los Angeles.

From there, he is yet to find out what fate awaits him!

In an action series like this, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Makoto Edamura (Chiaki Kobayashi) and Laurent Thierry (Junichi Suwabe) are two of the characters you will meet early. Think of it as a pick for viewers who like fast, high-impact fights. With 23 episodes in total, there is enough room for the story to develop.

Production & Appeal

Animation is handled by WIT STUDIO and Production I.G, so the studio's house style defines how Great Pretender looks and moves on screen. Within the action category, fight choreography, pacing and sound design carry much of the weight. Viewers rate it 8.1/10, which signals strong word of mouth. On the casting side, Chiaki Kobayashi voicing Makoto Edamura gives the lead role a recognizable voice. Released in 2020, it competed with that season's other new series for attention.
